Write Here, Write Now: 8.7 – The Source

Trebunie-Tutki and Twinkle Brothers – The Source

Not exactly a mash-up, as the form is commonly understood, as this is not songs mixed together, but rather two separate genres of music – Polish folk and Jamaican dub.

I’m no expert in either genre, but listening to this song, it seems that the musicians involved have managed to maintain their styles of music, while finding harmonious melodies and rhythms in each others sounds – the Polish choral style and sawing/plucked violin vs the Jamaican dub bass, rhythm guitar and entreating lead vocals.

A bit like a musical ‘Cool Runnings’, maybe this shouldn’t work, but it does. Cultural globalisation, musical multiculturalism, it brings to life the cliché of music as a universal language.
